Public speaking isn’t just about standing in front of a crowd. It’s about learning how to share your voice in spaces where you may not always feel heard. For young women in STEAM, strong communication skills are a powerful tool for leadership, advocacy, and confidence.

Here are five practical tips that make speaking up feel a little more doable:

1. Know your message.

Before anything else, get clear on what you want to say. Whether you're presenting a project or speaking on a panel, having a clear message helps you stay grounded even if nerves creep in.

2. Don’t wait to feel “ready.”

You don’t need to be the most experienced person in the room to contribute. Your perspective matters now, not just later. The more you speak, the more natural it becomes.

3. Practice out loud, not just in your head.

Reading your notes silently is helpful, but saying them aloud is what really prepares you. It helps with pacing, clarity, and confidence.

4. Reclaim the pause.

It’s okay to pause and collect your thoughts. It’s not a mistake, it’s power. A well-placed pause keeps your audience with you and gives your brain a moment to catch up.

5. Speak like you, not who you think you should be.

You don’t need to sound overly formal or like someone else. The strongest presentations are the ones that feel authentic. Your voice is enough, just as it is.

Public speaking can be intimidating, but it’s also a skill you can grow. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to take up space and lead with clarity.
